Maybe he is being honored for his contributions to sound, special effects and the presentation (THX) of movies.
You can't deny that ILM has turned out some great special effect through the years. Unfortunatly, most of the movies that they were in were really bad.
Anyway you look at it, it's hard to accept that he is getting this for anything but directing. And as a director...ehh. He has done some really great stuff, but the mediocre stuff tipped the scales a while back.
I thought about the technical stuff after I posted. I think I was just trying for some more hate mail to begin with.~ I have no problem with him receiving this award (it is from the AFI afterall), but when I look at a list of all the movies he has been involved with, it isn't very substantial and the quality is wildly uneven. I love the Indiana Jones movies, but that last one is awful and he his only credited with the story on those, not the actual scripts. I used to love the Star Wars movies, but he didn't even direct 'Empire' and that is probably the best one. 'American Graffiti' is a good movie, but highly overrated. I think his problem is not knowing when he should step back and let some one else do the work. He needs to take a management class that focuses on delegation of duties. He certainly has made his mark in American cinema, it just could have been so much better.

In my opinion, that would be always. I think that he is a great story guy, and i think he is great at visuals. However, he should let someone else direct, write the script (from his story treatment), edit, and do everything else.
That's what happened with Empire, and that is why it is so great.
The sad thing about Episode I and especially Episode II is that while they don't compare with the first trilogy, with a little tightening up (especially Ep 2) they would have been really good movies. As they stand, they are testaments to bad dialog, loose storytelling, and bad editing.
